First off I am not a gamer—at all. But one thing I have noticed about the user interface with many video games is that they stink. Let me clarify that, they are involve too much effort to pick up. But so do Illustrator, Photoshop and CAD. Those programs are geared to professionals as their price tags suggest. Though I was never good at the early games such as Mario, I knew the one basic concept: GO TO THE RIGHT! The end of the level was at the far right of the screen. I played Sonic and I went to the right and I found the boss and the end of the level. I never had to worry about camera angle. I find myself not wanting to play video games since I don’t want to deal with the learning curve and confusion.
I know that I can’t move in the z-index in Mario. It just ain’t happening. From my use of a Mac at work I enjoy knowing that I can’t configure something within a minute cause I have exhausted all the places to look for it by then. Sounds strange to be happy knowing that you can’t do something; but it allows my brain to move on to either finding an answer or forgetting about. I could make a list of programs, that though good, I just never clicked with (Opera pre v9, Winamp, Linux, etc).
